Tacoma Philos
The Tacoma Philo Affiliate of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is a distinguished auxiliary group composed of women who, while not pursuing a four-year college degree, are deeply committed to community service and the sorority's mission of sisterhood, scholarship, and service. These women, known as "Philos" (meaning "friends"), collaborate closely with the Tacoma Alumnae Chapter, Zeta Phi Sigma, to promote the sorority's objectives and principles.

Philo Affiliates have a rich history within Sigma Gamma Rho. Nationally, the Philo Affiliate was organized in 1980 under the leadership of Mrs. Evelyn H. Hood, the 14th International Grand Basileus of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. This initiative recognized the valuable contributions of women who, despite not holding a four-year degree, were dedicated to the sorority's ideals and community service.

In Tacoma, the Philo Affiliate was chartered on September 1, 2018, welcoming five dynamic women into its ranks. Achiya Clemons, Pat Jackson-Holley, Michelle Travis-Brandley, Michele Ogden, and Deanna Nord have since played a vital role in supporting both national and local projects, including:

-
Thanksgiving Outreach: Annually delivering food to deserving veterans.
-
School Adoption: Providing school supplies and toys to Roosevelt Elementary School.
-
Project Reassurance: Conducting workshops and activities to assist pregnant teens and educate teen mothers on prenatal and postnatal care.
-
Project Wee Savers: Teaching youth aged 6–18 about saving and investing.
-
Operation Big Book Bag: Supplying school materials to children in need.
-
Youth Symposium: Hosting discussions on prevalent issues affecting youth, such as drugs, teen violence, and low self-esteem.

Through these initiatives, the Tacoma Philos have demonstrated unwavering dedication to enhancing the quality of life within their community, embodying the spirit of "Greater Service, Greater Progress" that defines Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.
